Why CCPT Works: The Deeper Reasoning Behind the Model—and How It Shapes Every Response
You know the skills. But do you know why they matter?
Most therapists are taught what to do in Child-Centered Play Therapy. Reflect feelings. Track behavior. Give choices. Set limits. But few are ever taught the deeper reasoning behind those responses—and when the “why” is missing, you often find yourself second-guessing, drifting from the model, or wondering whether you should intervene differently.
This training is designed to resolve that.
Together, we will explore the underlying philosophy, principles, and architecture of Child-Centered Play Therapy and examine why the model works the way it does. Rather than viewing CCPT as a collection of techniques, you will learn to understand it as a complete, coherent system in which every response serves a purpose.
Topics include:
- The theoretical foundations of Child-Centered Play Therapy through the work of Rogers, Axline, and Landreth
- Why the therapeutic relationship remains the primary agent of change
- How the therapeutic environment supports growth, autonomy, and self-discovery
- The role of neutrality and its importance in the child-centered process
- Why reflective responding is far more than a communication skill
- The deeper purpose behind choice-giving and empowerment
- Why limit setting works and how it supports responsibility and self-control
- The distinction between encouragement, praise, and esteem building
- The purpose of narrative summary, commentary, and enlargement responses
- The clinical reasoning behind I Wonder statements and the Whisper Technique
- Why Child-Centered Play Therapists do not answer questions, make choices for children, direct play, or rely on teaching and advice
By the end of the training, you will have a deeper understanding of the child-centered model, increased confidence in your clinical decision-making, and greater conviction in your ability to trust the process.
When you understand the “why,” the skills make sense. When the skills make sense, the model comes alive.
